About Rotherham Gymnastics

Rotherham Sports Acro provide Acrobatics and Gymnastics for all ages and abilities. Gymnastics and Acrobatics is a great sport for both Male and Female Gymnasts; it combines strength with flexibility and power with agility and precision.

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the old Chapel building on the corner of John Street and Woodhouse Green, Thurcroft in Rotherham?

About Us / Building Image

Many years ago the downstairs of the building was a Chapel and the upstairs a cinema. During the late 1970′s the building was put up for sale because the building had out lived its original purpose, less people were attending the Cinema and Chapel.

Mr Jeff Stevenson and Mr John Tankard decided to buy the building to use as a gym for 60 gymnasts. A Gym Club was formed for 6 and 4 piece gymnastics and then eventually a Sports Acro Club was formed. The gymnasts practised Sports Acrobatics solely for fun, as they did not compete until later years. The gymnastics club took place upstairs where the cinema had once been and one of the buyers and founders of the club, Mr Jeff Stevenson used to live in the downstairs part of the building. When Mr Stevenson and Mr Tankard retired from coaching at the club they both decided to remain as trustees of the Club.

The gym club finally began to enter competitions beginning at the friendly competitions and then working their way up to Yorkshire competitions and right up to British Final standard. Parents helped out at the club and many of them became very successful coaches.

Parents still play a big part in the Club as Committee Members and the majority of our new coaches are parents of gymnasts in the club. Ex gymnast Katie Gibbard has recently retired from gymnastics but has decided to continue helping the club by becoming a coach.
